Lactobacillus Reuteri Superfood

LR Superfood is cultured dairy, made with completely different strains of bacteria than conventional yogurt.  These beneficial bacteria - Lactobacillus reuteri - impart significantly higher benefits and far higher probiotics compared to conventional yogurts.

L.reuteri bacteria species is a superstar in the world of intestinal microbes. According to Dr. William Davis MD, author of Super Gut states: "Up until the mid-twentieth century, most people in the Western world enjoyed benefits of this bacterial species dwelling in their GI tracts, which they acquired from their mothers as infants by passage through the birth canal and breastfeeding. Indigenous people living in the jungles and mountains as well as chickens, pigs, and other creatures, carry this microorganism, suggesting that it plays an essential role in survival. But modern life has eradicated this species from 96 percent of people in the modern world. Today only 4 percent— fewer than 1 in twenty people— continue to enjoy this marvelous species.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've had a huge response to this new starter culture, thank you so much! With any new product, there are naturally a lot of questions. So I put together an FAQs post all about this L. Reuteri Superfood Yogurt Starter.

Health Benefits of L. reuteri

SIBO and L. Reuteri

L. reuteri is very unique compared to most bacteria that live in the colon. L. reuteri prefers to colonize the upper gastrointestinal tract, the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. While it takes residence in the upper GI tract it produces natural antibiotics called bacteriocins that are very effective against undesirable bacteria species that live in the small intestine that can cause SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth). Loss of this special species is likely the reason more and more people are experiencing SIBO. Restoring this species is becoming part of the solution to SIBO.[1][2]

L. Reuteri increases the Love Hormone Oxytocin

Oxytocin is the hormone that soars after having a baby, but also the one you feel when you're in love. It creates a feeling of connectedness and compassion. L. reuteri has the unique ability to trigger the release of this hormone in the brain. Experiments done at Massuchetuts Institute of Technology MIT demonstrated L. reuteri has a unique ability to create more oxytocin in the brain. [3]

L. Reuteri and H Pylori

Some studies have shown that L. reuteri has the potential to help eradicate H. pylori from the intestine when added to standard H. Pylori therapy. L. reuteri works by competing with H. pylori and inhibiting its binding to glycolipid receptors. The competition reduces the bacterial load of H. pylori and restores balance. [4]

L. Reuteri and Colic

According to clinical research, where eighty-three infants completed the trial taking L. reuteri (Probiotic drops, BioGaia AB) or the placebo for one week. L. reuteri improved infantile colic and symptoms such as crying time in breast-fed infants by 95%.[5]

L. Reuteri and Candida

L. reuteri exhibited antifungal properties against five of the six most common oral Candida species. It completely eliminated these species which is now being studied for the treatment of Small intestinal fungal overgrowth (SIFO). SIFO is characterized by the presence of an excessive number of fungal organisms in the small intestine associated with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. [6]

 Lr Superfood is Different

LR Superfood's fermentation process is different from that of conventional yogurts: LR Superfood is fermented for 36 hours at a lower temperature than conventional yogurts and requires the addition of prebiotic fiber to the milk. So it's important to check and see if your yogurt maker keeps the temperature low enough — 97-100 F° to make the yogurt. See the FAQ below.

This process generates very high probiotic bacterial counts, far higher than store-bought yogurts or even homemade ones.

Our unique LR Superfood starter culture provides a high concentration of the exceptional microorganism, Lactobacillus reuteri.

Restoring L. reuteri into your gastrointestinal tract is among the most powerful strategies you can apply for health, both physical and emotional.

The result is a rich, thick, delicious, pleasantly-tart, and super-healthy dairy product, far superior to regular yogurts which are fermented relatively quickly, and typically contain much lower counts of probiotic bacteria.

And there's a bonus, too! Once you've made a batch of LR Superfood, you can use some of it to culture your next batch!

The Right Equipment Is Important!

To keep your yogurt at the best temperature, you'll need an appliance with a temperature adjustment of 100°F and a timer that goes to 36 hours. This can be a yogurt maker, instapot, or sous vide device. You'll need to check to make sure these have those features, but here are some appliances that should work well for you.

Yogurt Maker

This is probably my favorite of the yogurt makers that I have tried. It's made by Luvele, which is a terrific company that is passionate about what they do.

Luvele 4 Jar Yogurt Maker

This is another great updated yogurt maker from Luvele. You get 4 jars which are each 13.5 ounces. It keeps the temp between 78 and 122 degrees F and has a 36-hour digital. It's great for making multiple kinds of yogurt.

Suteck Yogurt Maker

Other Yogurt Makers

There are cheaper yogurt makers available on Amazon. They do work but can be a little tricky to set the time and temperature. Watch this video.

Sous Vide

Sous Vide

We've made dozens of jars of yogurt with this device. You can make larger batches so it's very convenient. It's actually a well-known cooking method used by many chefs.

You'll need a sous vide stick and a container to place the yogurt in a water bath. It allows you to make several jars at one time and controls the temperature perfectly.

Sous Vide Precision Cooker

Here is a link for the container I use but you can use your own container if you'd like:

Instant Pot Pro

Instapots/Pressure Cookers

Not all instapots have a manual temperature setting that can be set to 100°F.

L. reuteri bacteria love human body temperature. Regular yogurt makers/instapots are usually automatically set to higher temperatures of 110°F or more, which is too hot for L. reuteri to survive.

Test your device with a cup of water and a thermometer before making your first batch. I hesitate to recommend certain brands because it isn't always standard for all the pots, so please just make sure yours can maintain 100°F.
