Greek and Skyr Yogurt Made in an Insulated Mug

Yogurts you can Make in a Mug!

Insulated mug

I have been eating Skyr and Greek yogurts for many years. I love the creaminess and high protein of these yogurts. The high protein content is also the reason I eat and use Greek yogurt a lot in recipes. Skyr yogurt tastes more like cheese and has even more protein than Greek yogurt, which has a lot.

Skyr is one of those special, cultured foods that has truly stood the test of time, and this special heirloom culture comes from Iceland. I’ve been enjoying Skyr yogurt for many years, always wishing I could make my own from my own starter culture, knowing it would have more probiotics. So when the wonderful folks at Cutting Edge Cultures (CEC) created a Skyr and Greek yogurt starter, I was beyond thrilled—I just can’t stop making it!

What really made me fall in love with this process was discovering that you don’t even need a yogurt maker. You can use a stainless steel insulated mug, and it works beautifully! Stainless steel is safe and non-corrosive, making it an excellent choice for fermenting probiotic-rich foods. It is easy, practical, and durable—the perfect yogurt-making companion! CEC even tested it and found that the probiotic count was just as high as when made in a yogurt maker.  That’s when I knew I had to share this with you. You can make Skyr and Greek yogurt in just four easy steps, and if you want it to be higher in protein, strain out the whey, and you have a rich creamy yogurt that you will love!

You can still use a yogurt maker. There are instructions for both methods.

I've been making countless batches of this yogurt in many different high-quality stainless steel mugs, and then I decided to make my own mug, which is the perfect size for making a batch of Greek and Skyr yogurt at home. You can use any High-quality Insulated mug to make this yogurt; you don't have to use mine. I've tried many, and they work great. Just stay away from the cheap thin mugs.

I found a super easy yogurt strainer that pairs perfectly with the mug—and both of them fit right in the door of your refrigerator. It’s so quick and simple that I make it several times a week.

While you can find Skyr and Greek yogurt in small containers at the store, they are just not the same. Store-bought yogurts often lose their probiotics while sitting on shelves 🦠—but when you make your own, you know it’s fresh, alive, and filled with good bacteria.

🥛 Health Benefits of Skyr Yogurt

Skyr Yogurt: An Heirloom of Icelandic Tradition

Skyr is thicker, creamier, and richer than most yogurts, thanks to its Icelandic heritage. And when strained, it’s packed with protein. It’s truly one of the creamiest, most satisfying cultured foods you can make—and once you try it, you’ll understand why I’m so hooked. 💛

Skyr is a treasured, cultured dairy food that has been part of Icelandic life for over a thousand years. Handed down through generations, it's made with heirloom cultures that preserve both flavor and tradition. In a land with short growing seasons and long winters, Skyr was a reliable and nourishing food that supported entire communities. Its staying power tells the story of a food that is not only delicious but essential.

🛡️🥣 The Vikings ate Skyr. Skyr was a staple in their diet, made from milk and strained to create a thick, protein-rich food. It was valued for its long shelf life and nutritional content, which made it ideal for long voyages. Archaeological evidence and Norse sagas confirm its use in Viking-era Scandinavia.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Greek Yogurt 💚

What Makes Greek Yogurt So Unique? 🥣✨

Greek (and Skyr) yogurt stands apart from other yogurts because of the way it’s made—and the benefits it brings. Unlike regular yogurt, Greek yogurt goes through an extra straining process that removes much of the whey (the liquid part of milk). This gives it that wonderfully thick, creamy texture and makes it naturally higher in protein. It’s also special because of its beautiful balance of taste and nutrition: tangy yet mild, rich yet refreshing, and filled with live probiotics that nourish your gut and support your immune system.

A bit of history: Greek yogurt has been enjoyed for centuries in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures, where it’s known not just as a food, but as a nourishing staple of daily life. Traditionally, it was made by fermenting fresh milk and straining it to achieve its signature thickness—often served with honey.

Another reason it’s unique is its incredible versatility. You can enjoy it sweet or savory—as a breakfast bowl, in smoothies, as a dip, or even as a healthy swap in baking and cooking.

And don’t forget—when you make your own at home, you’re getting even more probiotic power because it’s fresh, alive, and not sitting on a store shelf losing strength. That’s why I always say: making your own cultured foods is one of the best gifts you can give your body. 💛

  • Supports Weight Management: The combo of protein and probiotics helps promote satiety and a healthy metabolism.
  • Versatile & Nourishing: Can be enjoyed sweet or savory, and is a nourishing base for smoothies, dips, and more.

High-Protein Yogurts & Your GLP-1: A Natural Support 💚

That’s a big focus on high protein—especially with all the buzz around GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and its role in blood sugar regulation and appetite control. One of the beautiful things about high-protein yogurts—like Greek yogurt, Skyr, and strained kefir—is how they naturally work with your body to help you feel satisfied and balanced. You may have heard a lot about GLP-1, a hormone your body produces that plays a key role in regulating blood sugar and controlling appetite.

Here’s where it gets exciting:
Eating protein-rich foods like thick yogurt can actually stimulate the release of GLP-1. This helps:

  • 🥣 Keep You Full Longer – GLP-1 signals fullness to your brain, which can help with appetite control and reduce overeating.
  • 🩸 Balance Blood Sugar – It helps slow down how quickly your stomach empties, which leads to steadier blood sugar levels after meals.
  • 💪 Support Weight & Metabolism Goals – Combining high-protein foods with your meals can naturally assist your body’s metabolism in a balanced, gentle way.

What I love most is that cultured, high-protein yogurt offers so much more than just protein—it’s alive with probiotics, calcium, and nutrients that work in harmony with your body. And when you make it at home, you know every spoonful is fresh, potent, and nourishing. 💛
