Kefir Diabetes

Captain of your ship and the master of your destiny.
Shaped by the light we let through us
.

I remember that day quite vividly. It was over ten years ago. It was February and bitter cold outside. I made myself  a breakfast that I thought was healthy. Fiber One cereal and skim milk. Thirty minutes later a terrible feeling came over me, one that I recognized from having gestational diabetes with the pregnancy of my daughter. I had a blood sugar meter that I could test my blood sugar with, and when I saw the numbers my heart sank. I picked up the phone to call my brother-in-law, who was a medical physician. He very gently and kindly confirmed for me what I already knew. My blood sugar was too high and out of the normal range. These were diabetic numbers, but I already knew this. Devastated, I walked into the kitchen where my family was, and  burst into tears.

How could I have gone from running five miles a day and racing through life to having diabetes and high blood pressure? And then watching my family, one by one, deteriorate as well. It really broke me. I felt as though it was my fault and I could not find my way out of this situation. Having a four pound preemie who was delivered prematurely in an effort to save my life  just heaped more guilt upon me as I watched her struggle to grow and thrive. It was these experiences that changed my life. Changed everything, actually, and caused me to cry out from a deep place in my soul for help. Standing on the other side of these experiences, though, has caused me to be so thankful for the pain they caused.

A couple of months ago I was talking to my husband about these very incidences. Not only did I find the answers I was seeking, but I found more joy and understanding of our body and how it teaches us if we listen. Maybe It was because I can help others find answers with the things that have so effectively changed me. Many people ask for wellness, but I have discovered that you must tune yourself to look for the solution and not focus on the pain of what you are living. I used to tell myself that I would find the answer, that it would come to me. Then I would hang on to that answer and hope for dear life. The answers came swiftly and turned my life upside down.

The one thing I see most consistently in my classes is the lowering of blood sugar after people start drinking kefir every day. The emails I get are quite astounding, to say the least. In the beginning it was my story that made me realize how effective it was. Kefir had such an impact on me that it started me on a journey that has led me to a greater understanding of who I was and the profound effect that food can have on the body.

It was ten years ago when I discovered during my third pregnancy that I had gestational diabetes. I managed it quite successfully during my pregnancy. The diabetes went away only to return with a vengeance seven months later, with a slew of other problems. I knew a lot about diabetes. My youngest sister and niece had type 1 diabetes and my dad had type 2 diabetes. Watching my sister live with this from the time she was ten, and gaining understanding of what it can do to the body was a life-altering journey for me. I was not naïve about the difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes. They are quite different in nature – one is caused by the autoimmune system attacking itself (type 1) and the other (type 2) is caused by a condition known as “insulin resistance.” In fact, in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, there’s plenty of insulin around but the body can’t use it effectively. I had type 2 diabetes and knew It was not something to fool around with it. It can shorten your life and make you feel terrible.

When I started drinking kefir, I was shocked at how quickly it lowered my blood sugar and blood pressure. So I did experiments on myself to see if it really was the kefir. After many trials, I was convinced it was the kefir. Drinking at least a cup of kefir in a smoothie every day, I watched my numbers normalize and diabetes quickly became a thing of the past for me.
My friend and CPA was the one who really clued me in to how effective kefir was on blood sugar. She had just  been diagnosed with diabetes in the last few years and it had been caused by her life style choices and sedentary life style. We talked about this often. She really wasn’t wanting to change her eating habits very much despite the diagnosis. I had told her to try kefir and every time she did, it would lower her blood sugar quite dramatically. She never wanted to be bothered making it and would fall off the wagon over and over again. So, a couple of months ago she called me in a panic. Her blood sugars were so bad that they were going to put her on insulin shots. She didn’t do very well with making kefir every day so I told her to use the kefir packages and make a gallon at a time. Then she would always have some kefir and wouldn’t have to make it every day. You have to meet people where they are. Some people aren’t going to do the things that I am willing to do. I always try to find their path of least resistance and something they will actually do. The results were once again a lowering of her blood sugar so that she never did have to go on the shots. She still has diabetes, but it is well managed and under control. Her doctor was so impressed that she asked for a copy of my book.

So why does kefir lower blood sugar? It is still something that one day I plan to fully understand, but these are the bits and pieces I have discovered.

Normally, you have about 300 different strains of bacteria in your gut. About ten to twelve pounds of your body weight is this intestinal colony of bacteria. If you are healthy, most of this colony consists of healthy families of bacteria, but if you are unwell, trouble will ensue. In total, you are at least 100 trillion cells of bacteria. You and I are living sacks of bacteria and nobody is really talking about this. Bacteria outnumber the cells in your body. When things go haywire, you can be sure that your bacteria have gotten out of balance. Diabetes is very inflammatory. The blood is not moving through the arteries in a fluid fashion, but instead creeps through like sludge when blood sugar is high. Kefir is anti-inflammatory and this will help every function in the body. It is also full of enzymes, which relieve stress on the pancreas. It is full of beneficial bacteria that help cells communicate with one another in ways that only essential bacteria can communicate. Kefir is an important probiotic that has many bioactive ingredients, which give it unique health benefits. Consuming kefir helps a myriad of problems. It did for me and countless others I have helped.

It has been almost ten years and the diabetes has never returned. The difference between how I feel now and when I had diabetes is like comparing different people. I can feel with every fiber of my being that my body has found its rhythm and loves life. The body gives us clues every day and the better you feel, the more you will know that you are on the right path.

One of the reasons I have a blog, write books, and teach classes, is because I really do want others to feel the same wellness and joy I feel. When you feel better you do better. It just spills out of you.
Don’t be surprised if it happens to you, too. Joy is hard to control.

Wishing you all well. ~ Donna

I used to make and drink my own fresh milk kefir every day. I used organic milk from a local dairy. It was good at first but then I began to dislike the taste and felt like I was having to force myself to drink it every day. I ended up quitting and giving my grains to a friend. That was about 2 years ago. About a month ago a friend and co-worker was talking about her yummy water kefir drinks she made herself and I got excited. I had always wanted to try the water kefir and see if I liked it better than the milk. She had an over abundance of grains and said she would be more than happy to give me some for free. The next day she brought in a mason jar with a batch she started the night before just for me. I forget what juice she said she had put it in. She gave it to me with a tight lid on it. When I got it home I took the lid off and replaced it with a once folded paper towel and secured it in place with a rubber band. Two days later I strained the grains and immediately enjoyed my very first ever taste of water kefir. It was soooo good! Better than I remember the milk one ever tasting. I started making my batches using just organic evaporated cane and lett it sit on my kitchen counter for 2-3 days then enjoyed it right away. I read somewhere that if you used filtered water then you should replace the minerals somehow. It was suggested that when I had melted the sugar in the water and put my grains that before sealing the top of the jar I should pour just a bit from the previous batch into the jar as well. Not much, just a bit. My grains LOVE me for this. In a month I had to expand to 3 more mason jars. I am now getting about a gallon of water kefir every 4 days. I have another friend that I have introduced water kefir to and thankfully she is around when I am preparing my batches so she helps me drink some while I put the rest away in the fridge. I like having some after work. It’s a lovely treat to come home to. I don’t add anything to it after initial fermentation. I prefer the regular flavor the evaporated cane sugar gives it. My friend who drinks it with me was recently diagnosed with Type 2 and she was worried at first because it’s made with sugar but she has found that when she sips this while eating then testing her blood sugar levels later that her numbers are lower than they normally are. She has lost weight and the doctors are telling her that she is doing so well now that soon she won’t have to test her blood every day, just once a week instead. I am giving her one of the jars to take home so she can have her own. :)

    Hi Donna
I just purchased some milk grains from your site . My problem is the grains I received are tiny and I’ve been trying to rehydrate them for a week now. The last 3 days the curds & whey are separating and I’m having a hard time separating the curds & keifer grains… Any suggestions. The curd is so much and I can’t even see the keifer grains….

    • You can take some whey from the bottom of the bowl where the whey has strained through and pour it over the curds and use a rubber spatula to stir them. This will help you to break it up. If you add some liquid minerals your grains will grow faster and plump up. You can get that at most health food stores or on my site. If you still have trouble let me know.

I am type2 diabetic with insulin injection each day. Does one continue with medication in tandem with milk kefir. Did you discontinue meds. (if you were on them?) at some point in time once realised sugar levels were under control.

    Hello Donna,
A dear friend of mine had given me some of the mushrooms and the kiefer water, she said it would benefit my cousin who has just been diagnosed with liver cancer, she had been giving it to her husband who also has cancer and that ever since he has been taking the water kiefer his lab work has been remarkable, she showed me how to make it and she uses panela sugar, this turns it dark brown in color and it smells as it ferments , looks nasty too, is it supposed to smell like this? or is it just because its in panela? I really dont want to give this to my cousin because of the smell and the way it looks in the bottle, any advice ? also, she told me to let it grow for 3 days before I change the water. thank you in advance, dee

    • Is this water kefir crystals? If it is water kefir you shouldn’t let it go 3 days but rather only one. This is why it smells bad it ferments to long.
I am glad it is helping this is wonderful!

There is a great raw restaurant in my neighborhood that serves kefir water. that was the first and only time i tried it- i have type 2 diabetes, and instantly after drinking the kefir i felt a bit woozy, like i do when i drink beer. afterwards, i had diarrhea. is this common? should i give it another try? thanks!

    • I would not recommend water kefir for diabetics for this reason. You can never be sure how they made it or how long they fermented it. So you can’t be sure of the sugar that is in it and if it was made with straight juice which can turn to alcohol. I would recommend kombucha instead.

  8. D. Rodriguez says:

How long can i store the kefir in the refrigerator> I also have VERY high LDL . Would drinking kefier daily make my numbers go even higher?

  9. Wayne Patton says:

Just discovered your site. I plan to use the wonderful recepies

  10. Vickie says:

Can you use almond milk instead of regular milk? I can not Drink regular milk. Thanks!

    • Yes you can use almond milk instead of regular milk.

    • Rebecca says:

In order for Kefir grains to continue to grow and not “starve” they need mammalian milk. You can use other forms of milk (like almond milk) to ferment and drink, but eventually the kefir grains will die.

What some people do is keep the grains healthy in regular mammalian milk (cow, goat, etc) and when they grow, they use the excess grains to ferment and culture the almond milk, or soy milk (yuck) or rice milk, etc.

  12. Shirley says:

Hi, I am unable to find raw milk to brew my kefir, I currently have it frozen because of that. What is a good substitute?

  13. Mary Prince says:

I just ordered my kefir grain and if i drink a cup a day can i see my blood sugars numbers go down fast? My numbers are in the high 200′s to 300′s. I am on Insulin 10units and medformin 2000mg daily so I am going to let you know what numbers I get as soon as my kit comes in.

    Thanks

    Mary

I will not be able to change my milk kiefer for about a week. I have heard from you that i can put it in the refrigerator for that time but should i also add extra sugar to the milk? I use skim milk when i make my milk kiefer. thanks for your info!

  15. Sally says:

Hi’, I just started Making the water kefir and I was wondering if after it ferments if it has a lot of sugar left in it? My husband has to be very careful of his sugar intake, I was wondering if this has too much sugar for him to drink? Does It spike your blood sugar level? If I let it ferment longer will it have less sugar in it?
    Thanks, I love your Blog!

So excited reading this. I have milk kefir and we makes shakes a couple times a week. i didn’t know it would help my husband so much if i gave it to him everyday! Thank you thank you! I don’t mind making it everyday at all, seriously? it’s not hard and you don’t have to rinse it like everyone says.

I’m one of those that tire of making my own kefir so often. Also, i cannot get raw milk where I am and I make water kefir. I’ve never had milk kefir. Where do I get these packets you spoke of??? Thanks for your post!

    • Donna Schwenk says:

They are the Milk Kefir Starter Culture: 2-pack or 6-pack The third item down on this page. Each package makes 7 gallons. They are terrific for people who don’t want to make kefir everyday. http://www.culturesforhealth.com/cultured-food-life-starter-culture-recommendations

      • Dawn P says:

Thanks. I see in the FAQ’s though that I shouldn’t make it with store bought milk. Unfortunately it is illegal to buy raw milk in my state and my efforts to find it other ways has been futile (i.e. I have a friend that has a ‘cow share’ but she lives in the other corner of the state and I can’t find a place to do that here). So is there anyway I can make it with store bought milk???

        • Donna Schwenk says:

Yes, you can use store bought milk. I actually made it with store bought milk for months before I found raw milk. It really works well to make pasteurized milk a living nutritious food. Good bacteria likes pasteurized milk because it can thrive and grow and isn’t crowded. It still worked great for me even though it was store bought

  21. One book I have that references it is “Probiotics: Natures Internal Healers”

  22. There’s good research out there indicating that certain bacteria (including E. coli) mimic insulin in the body, releasing its own insulin-like substance and blocking the body’s own receptors. Kefir, being probiotic would definitely help with this. Also, if you’re making kefir with high-fat milk, it will naturally help balance blood sugar. Love this story, thanks for sharing. <3

Liz, I would love info on this if you have a link. So many things to learn about the inner workings of the body. Thanks for commenting!

  24. Toni Legates says:

I’ve been doing extensive research on kefir as I am diabetic and in poor health. I have suffered my entire life with a skin and bone disorder called psoriasis and I believe this is caused by a lack of good bacteria in my gut. In spite of the fact that I take high dose probitoics everyday. I believe that making my own water kefir would be the best and most wholesome way of getting good bacteria in my gut. I was a little concerned about the sugar content of the water kefir since I Have Type 2 Diabetes. But, I truly encourages by your post. Thank you so much for sharing that information with me because I want so badly to regain my health!

    Sincerely,

    • Donna Schwenk says:

I really recommend regular milk kefir for diabetes over water kefir. It seems to be the most effective.

      • Toni Legates says:

I’ve already ordered water Kefir grains as of this morning. I plan to do a second fermentation hopefully allowing more of the sugar to be metabolized. If I find it affects my blood sugar readings to adversely then I will switch and purchase some milk kefir grains. Thank you for taking time to comment. I appreciate all the help I can get.

        Sincerely,
        Toni

has anyone found any actual comparison info regarding the different properties, especially sugar levels between the water and milk kefir? i would be really interested in reading it! I currently make water kefir as it seems much easier for me to digest than the milk, but if there is truly a big difference i might have to figure something else out…. thanks in advance for any info.
